our program
First Responders throughout the US witness multiple traumatic events throughout their career.
They face higher rates of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety issues related to the volume and severity of tragic incidents they respond to daily. More First Responders die by suicide than in the line of duty. Our Mission at the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation is to prevent Suicide with our Military and First Responders.
To counteract this alarming trend, we provide specially trained dogs to help reduce the impacts of trauma related stress and PTSD. A Peer Support Dog brings awareness and helps combat the signs of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. First Responders are reluctant to ask for help due to the stigma and not knowing where to find resources. The presence of trained Peer Support Dogs can help alleviate the awkwardness and allow for a more calming experience when discussing mental health.
Studies have shown that interaction with dogs provide both mental and physical health benefits including:
· The release of hormones that play a part in elevating moods, which can help with depression.
· Lower anxiety and reduce depression which can lead to thoughts of Suicide.
· Mental Stimulation allowing First Responders to open up and talk about their experiences.

After receipt of the application and documents, The Patriotic Service Dog Foundation will evaluate each applicant on a case by case basis. If accepted, each potential recipient will need to come out to our facility to meet with our staff and our available service dogs. If we feel a veteran is a potential match with one of our dogs we will require them if local to come out to training a minimum of 2 times per week to work/bond with the dog. Out of the area veterans will need to train with us 2-3 times for a one week stay. During this time the veteran will also learn how to properly care, handle and work with our dog in a positive and constructive manner.
* Please note, Tackett Service Dogs, Inc. retains full ownership of the dog through its working years. Once retired, the recipient may adopt the dog.

Can YOUR Dog Hack It With Tackett?
If you have your own dog that you would like to train as a service dog and you have applied/been accepted to our program, we will evaluate your dog's temperament for service work. If acceptable, the Patriotic Service Dog Foundation will sponsor the training for you and your dog. However, service work requires a very specific temperament which most dogs simply do not have. Training your own dog requires you to live local to us and attend classes 2x per week. If you have not yet purchased a dog and would like to do so in order to train as a service dog, please do not do so without the help of our staff. If you or a loved one could benefit from one of our service dogs, please don't wait any longer. Contact us today! |
